We focus in believers …

1.By emphasizing spiritual growth. 14:20

Stop growing in the wrong direction.

Spiritual infants — “prefer the amusing to the useful, the brilliant

to the solid”

Romans 16:19

For your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, but I want you to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil.

Grow through a renewed mind.

2.By keeping God’s purpose in view. 14:21-22

Old Testaments warnings instruct us.

Isaiah 28:11-12

For by people of strange lips and with a foreign tongue the LORD will speak to this people, to whom he has said, “This is rest; give rest to the weary; and this is repose”; yet they would not hear.

God treats audiences differently.

3.By emphasizing life-changing insight. 14:21-22

Tongues alone are a barrier.

Acts 2:12-16

And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”

But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:

Prophecy convinces and convicts. 14:24-25

John 4:28-30

So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” They went out of the town and were coming to him.

John 4:39-42

Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.”

So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word.

They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”

John 16:8-11

And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment

Acts 20: 18-21, 25-26

And when they came to him, he said to them: “You yourselves know how I lived among you the whole time from the first day that I set foot in Asia, serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials that happened to me through the plots of the Jews; how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, …
